As with most subjects Corvairs have numerous points of opinion. This is for a variety of reasons.
One of the problems with the internet is that bad opinions can crowd out good ones and there sometimes isn't much you can do about it. THIS IS GOING TO BE MY ATTEMPT.
MY QUALIFICATIONS -
**Owner and founder of Corvair Underground Inc. which, until we recently downsized, was the world's second largest supplier of Corvair parts. This has been since 1974.
** Corvair owner exclusively since 1968, having driven them since 1966. I do not drive or own anything else - other than an occasional rental car.
** Of the 38 years I've been in the exclusive Corvair parts business I spent about 20 years of it also repairing and rebuilding Corvairs themselves. In the 1980's I had 2 full time mechanics working for me doing only Corvair and Corvair powered work.
NOW READ THIS PART VERY CAREFULLY!
Am I the last word in Corvair issues? Certainly not. I'm just another shmoo. What is written here is my opinion and nothing more. I believe I can back up all that I say, but people (some of whom I respect) may disagree with me.
I got a good lesson in this by participating online on a Corvair powered aircraft site. This was a place where many of the members only listened to one individual and absolutely, positively had no use for anyone else's opinion. People who disagreed with the one "guru" were mercilessly attacked.
For a long time this floored me. You would think that, in a place where a bad decision could involve falling out of the sky and killing yourself and others to be a place where every decision needed to be carefully weighed. In fact, to some of these people it was the exact opposite.
Finally a light went off in my head. Experimental aircraft is such a risky proposition there are people who need a "guru", a "god" if you will, he tells them something and you just do it without question. This is necessary to these folks because the idea that all opinions are more or less equal means that following the wrong ones could mean disaster. They needed to believe someone.
RATIONAL THOUGHT PROCESS
Here's the real truth. When you're listening to opinions ask yourself which arguments make the most sense to you. If I or anyone else tells you something that simply doesn't make sense to you then you have do more research.
To be more specific, if you think you have a bad coil and you replace it 2 or three times and the problems you were having before don't change, then that should tell you something. You'd be surprised how many time it doesn't.
If you try to fix something following someone's advice and the problem doesn't get solved or even gets worse don't automatically look for another answer - because, after all, you just had to have been given good advice the first time.
When trying to solve a problem don't try more than one thing at a time. This isn't always possible, but an orderly process of elimination is oftentimes the only way you'll solve a problem.
ONE LAST CAVEAT
As I said earlier I'm in the business of selling parts. That means, by nature, I can have an axe to grind - i.e. telling you to buy my stuff over someone else's. I will try and avoid those situations where I can. In my mind, I am a Corvair lover first and a businessman second. I see NOTHING to be gained by intentionally giving you poor advice just so I can sell something.
At the end of some of the entries I will try and elaborate as to my possible bias where necessary.
WHY WRITE THESE ENTRIES?
I spend a lot of time monitoring and participating on several online groups. Corsa's Virtual Vairs and the Corvair Center are two of them. I came to realize every time some topics popped up (yet, once again) I would spend a lot of my time giving answers that were too short and repetitive. I decided to write them down here where they could be accessed at any time.
Keep in mind that the topics will be added to as I have the time. That means if you click on one and it comes up "under construction" then I haven't had the time to post yet. It may take a little while to cover all the subjects.
I ALWAYS welcome your input and your questions!
